I slipped the note under the pizza box so fast I thought my mother-in-law would see it: âPlease help me. Donât leave.â
When the delivery driver looked down and saw it, something shifted in his expression. And when he heard her snap, âShe doesnât need a phone, she needs discipline,â I knew he understood more than I could say out loud.
He nodded slightlyâso subtle no one else would noticeâand handed over the receipt.
Then he left.
And for a moment⌠nothing happened.
I thought maybe I had imagined it.
Maybe he didnât understand.
Maybe I had just made things worse.
Sharon locked the door behind him, as always.
âEat before it gets cold,â she said calmly, like nothing was wrong.
But her eyes lingered on me a second longer than usual.
I forced myself to sit down. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the slice of pizza.
Ten minutes passed.
Then twenty.
And thenâ
there was a knock at the door.
